What is Biochemistry?
Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes that occur within and related to living organisms. It’s a sub-discipline of both chemistry and biology that examines the chemical composition of living things and how they work. It serves as the foundation for understanding the molecular mechanisms that drive life.
Biochemistry focuses on the study of molecules such as proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, Vitamin and nucleic acids that form the structural and functional components of living cells. It examines how these biomolecules interact in metabolic pathways to sustain life processes, including energy production, genetic information transfer, and cellular communication.
Introduction to Biochemistry: Biochemistry ppt
What does biochemistry study?
- Chemical composition: What chemicals make up living organisms
- Cell structure: How cells are made and how they function
- Metabolism: The chemical reactions that convert food into energy
- Enzymes: Proteins that speed up metabolism by building and breaking down substances
- Carbohydrates: Organic compounds found in food and living tissues, such as sugars, starches, and fiber
